Biography
Macey Rowland, soprano, is quickly establishing herself as a versatile and compelling artist on both the operatic and concert stage. She recently completed her Performance Diploma at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where she studied under renowned soprano Heidi Grant Murphy as a Performance Fellow.
Rowland’s recent appearances include the title role in Handel’s Alcina, Hanna Glawari in The Merry Widow, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi in Lucca, Italy (directed by esteemed bass Peter Volpe), and a Typist in the world premiere of Mason Bates’ The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, a co-production with the Metropolitan Opera. She has also been featured as the soprano soloist in Beethoven’s Mass in C at Indiana University and Haydn’s Nelson Mass with the Bloomington Chamber Singers.
She has performed extensively in opera choruses, including Ainadamar, Roméo et Juliette, Sweeney Todd, and Carmen with IU Opera Theater, and La Bohème, La Traviata, The Elixir of Love, Hamlet, Pirates of Penzance, and HMS Pinafore with Opera Birmingham, where she began her career at the age of 17.
A committed interpreter of new music, Rowland earned third place in the 2025 Sparks & Wiry Cries Indiana SongSlam Composition competition for a collaborative work for voice and piano, for which she composed both the vocal line and original text in Elvish, inspired by her love of J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including first prize in the 2024 Indiana National Society of Arts and Letters competition in classical voice, a finalist placement for the Georgina Joshi Fellowship (2024), and the Joshi International Fellowship (2023).
Now based in Chicago, Rowland performs while also serving as a Teaching Artist with Chicago Opera Theater’s Opera for All program, where she helps CPS students create and perform original operas. She brings her artistry to both the stage and the classroom, inspiring audiences and young singers alike through performance, storytelling, and education.
